2018 FIESTA MELODRAMA

Written by a team of courageously anonymous writers
Directed by Andrew Primm and Vaughn Irving
Now in it’s 99th year, the Fiesta Melodrama is the longest running theatrical tradition in the western United States. The Santa Fe Playhouse, originally known as the Santa Fe Community Theater, first presented a melodrama in 1919.

Every year, this Santa Fe tradition lampoons local politicians and issues through the lens of an “Old West” style melodrama. Penned by an anonymous committee of writers, the Fiesta Melodrama is presented as part of the Fiesta de Santa Fe celebration.

So, what’s in store for 2018? Well, when “smooth-operator” Richard Phillip-Lay comes to town, most Santa Feans are entranced by the culture, modernity and jobs he’s promised to bring with him. But La Reina Lorena and investigative journalist Calamity can’t help but see through his facade. Will our heroes discover his dastardly plan in time to save Santa Fe and Fiestas before it’s too late? Will a certain arts collective help them, or turn the other way? When will they finish painting the lane markings on Paseo de Peralta? And what will become of the Midtown Campus? These answers and more at the 2018 Fiesta Melodrama!

Co-director Andrew Primm says the melodrama has the potential to attract people who don’t usually go to the theater, partially because “comedy and politics are like Siamese twins — they feed into each other naturally.”

Written by a team of courageously anonymous writers. Directed by Andrew Primm and Vaughn Irving.
